A confrontation between deputies and a man wanted for attempted murder escalated to gunfire in Lake Worth Beach, ending in the suspect's arrest and a minor injury. According to CBS12 News, Max Robens Gilles, a 27-year-old man, allegedly displayed a firearm when Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies tried to detain him yesterday.

The encounter took place after Gilles was linked to an August 13 shooting where a man was left with multiple bullet wounds. An intense search, utilizing surveillance footage, social media, and geolocation data from Gilles’ mobile device, led deputies to South J Street, where the attempted arrest turned violent. Gilles reportedly drew a Glock 43, the same type used at the initial crime scene, prompting the deputies to discharge their firearms. The WPBF account noted that at 12:28 p.m., deputies were conducting an investigation when they came across Gilles.

No deputies were injured during the incident, however, Gilles sustained a graze wound to his hip, was given medical attention on the scene, and later taken to a local hospital for his non-life-threatening injuries. Following treatment, he was booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, discharging a firearm in public, and aggravated assault with a firearm on an law enforcement officer.

Residents of Lake Worth Beach were roused by gunshots and the subsequent swift police response. "It was pretty intense,” Daniel Natirboff told CBS12 News. The area was quickly cordoned off as authorities took control of the scene. Gilles remains in custody at the Palm Beach County Jail while detectives from PBSO’s Violent Crimes Division continue their investigation.
