An elderly man from Biscayne Park has been detained following allegations that he poisoned his neighbor’s cats, which resulted in their deaths. Chaim Gubitz, 72, is accused of leaving out trays of food laced with poison, leading to the untimely death of two cats belonging to a local woman, who spoke out about her devastating discovery. According to 7News, Katherine found one of the cats unable to stand, and veterinary interventions revealed extensive kidney damage due to poisoning that proved fatal. She subsequently found the second cat dead in her backyard.

Gubitz's actions were uncovered after Katherine and her family reviewed surveillance footage that reportedly shows him placing the trays. Upon his arrest, neighbors expressed hope that such an act would not be repeated. Despite posting bond and being released from jail, the community's attention has been drawn to the issue of animal welfare and proper channels for dealing with neighborhood animals. Katherine emphasized to 7News the right and wrong ways to handle such situations.

In another recount of the incident, a different neighbor, Emily Adams, noted the appearance of suspicious plates of food weeks before the tragedy. Community members had previously contacted police regarding concerns. The neighborhood, now alerted to these risks, may be more vigilant against similar threats in the future, according to sentiments Adams shared with NBC Miami in a statement.

The police have since confirmed that Gubitz was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty. As NBC Miami reports, he initially claimed the poison was intended for rats. The alleged substance used in the poisoning has been sent to a laboratory for analysis by the Miami-Dade Animal Control unit.

The cats' owner, while grieving, expressed a sense of relief and gratitude for the community's support and the arrest. "I really did not think we would catch the person who did this," she told NBC Miami. The owner's proactive measures, such as placing a security camera, played a crucial role in identifying Gubitz as the suspect.
