
An incident at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry resulted in Customs and Border Protection officers opening fire on a 59-year-old Hispanic man who attempted to flee after being referred to a secondary inspection. This event occurred yesterday around 9:00 PM, as reported by the San Diego Police Department.
The suspect, who had been driving through the entry from Mexico to the United States, nearly hit several CBP officers as he tried to escape through the north end of the lot, which was blocked. According to the release by the San Diego Police Department, three officers with 22, 6, and 2 years of service responded to his dangerous maneuvers by discharging their firearms. After the gunfire, the man stopped and surrendered, sustaining minor injuries and consequently receiving medical treatment.
No CBP officers were injured during the event. Currently, the San Diego Police Homicide Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Homeland Security Investigations is focusing on the criminal actions of the suspect involved. The investigative process is extensive, encompassing multiple agencies and a thorough review.
