This weekend, the Chicago Police Department extends its vigilance with a DUI Saturation Patrol in the 25th (Grand Central) District. From 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, through 2 a.m. on Sunday, August 10, roving police officers will intensify monitoring for signs of impaired driving. The initiative, as announced on the Chicago Police Department's news webpage, aims not just at nabbing DUI offenders but also at ensuring adherence to speed limits and seat belt laws, with speed detection equipment in tow.
Incidentally, the police vehicles outfitted with speed detection equipment are not just for show; they're out there to catch speedsters in the act. Adding a cutting-edge twist to enforcement, the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit will be onsite, fast-tracking the DUI charge process. The mobile unit further streamlines the workflow by issuing Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds) right at the patrol location.
A preceding DUI Saturation Patrol in the 18th (Near North) District on the weekend of August 2-3 yielded a plethora of traffic citations but saw no DUI arrests. According to the same source, the operation resulted in one unsafe vehicle violation, eight insurance violations, three seat belt infringements, sixteen speed violations, four instances of distracted driving involving cellphones, and an assortment of 23 other traffic violations, totaling 58 citations altogether.
With no vehicles towed and zero arrests indicated outside of traffic-related incidents during the earlier patrol, the police seek to deter impaired driving before it starts. While the effectiveness of such saturation patrols is debated among the public, the Chicago Police Department's dedication to reducing road mishaps is clear as daylight in these ongoing efforts. It's noted, too, that traffic violations capture the broad array of non-conformities with the motoring laws, spanning from minor missteps to breaches carrying heftier risk and penalties.
