The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert warning of a series of commercial burglaries affecting the Galewood, Logan Square, and North Austin neighborhoods. The areas fall within the purview of the 14th (Shakespeare) District and the 25th (Grand Central) District, where local businesses have been hit by thieves targeting cash registers, safes, gambling machines, and ATMs. According to a statement by the Chicago Police, these incidents have seen offenders forcefully entering through rear doors or, in some instances, through the roofs.
The crimes have all occurred within a tight time frame. The 6800 block of W. North Ave experienced a breach sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning. The 2600 block of W. North Ave and the 5600 block of W. Division were similarly compromised. The common thread in these burglaries is the approach taken to quickly and often violently gain access, and to swiftly remove anything of value.
The suspects are described only as two unknown male offenders wearing hoodies. The Chicago Police urge all businesses to stay vigilant and take specified measures to protect their premises. Recommended actions include ensuring that the perimeter of properties are well-lit, keeping doors and windows secure, and repairing any damage to security elements such as windows, doors, or locks promptly.
Businesses with video surveillance systems are advised to maintain a copy of any incident footage, which could assist detectives in their investigation. "If you are a victim, do not touch anything. Call police immediately," the alert cautions. The police also suggest that if a witness to the incident is present, business owners should make sure to get their contact information.
