Six Delray Beach Police Department officers have been cleared following an internal review into their handling of a 2023 crash involving firefighter David Wyatt.
The crash occurred on June 9, 2023, when Wyatt’s 2015 Jeep Wrangler struck on West Atlantic Avenue. Officers noted that Wyatt had red eyes and a head laceration but did not find probable cause for a DUI investigation. He declined sobriety tests, no breath test was given, and a blood sample was not requested. By the time officers returned to the hospital, Wyatt had been discharged. He was later charged only with careless driving, as per the Sun Sentinel.
Delray Beach Police Chief Russ Mager stated the review was conducted to ensure protocols were followed. The inquiry, completed in August 2024, determined the six officers involved were not at fault.
Wyatt was later terminated after a separate 2024 incident in which he crashed a fire engine into a Brightline train. Records show his license was active at that time, though it had previously been suspended in October 2023 after a careless driving citation, CBS12 reported.
