The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is about to tackle a hot topic – the county's millage rate for the coming year. With the 2025 Douglas County millage rate proposal on the table, drawn up by the County Administrator's Office, residents are looking at a potential tax hike due to the pressing economic conditions that continue to toy with budgets and balance sheets.
In the proposal detailed by the County Administration, the new suggested millage rate is set at 15.763 which marks an increase of 3.7 mills compared to last year, which follows on the heels of two years of rate reductions, the proposed rate is a response to the inflationary pressures and the climbing costs of goods and services, along with the unpredictability of state and federal support – it's all coming together to push the fiscal needle towards an increase. According to a statement obtained by the Douglas County Government, Dr. David Corbin, Douglas County Administrator, mentioned, "Our recommendation comes after careful consideration of the county’s fiscal needs balanced against the growing strain of inflation, increased costs of goods and services, and uncertain state and federal funding."
Local homeowners are bracing for the impact, with the expectation being that a property with a fair market value of $250,000 will see an increase in property taxes by about $29 a month – if the homestead exemption applies, that totals roughly $348 more per year. The promise from the BOC Chairman Dr. Romona Jackson Jones is one of fiscal responsibility. She has steered the County Administrator and staff toward a thorough evaluation of how departments spend, aiming to address concerns of what some might call 'wasteful spending' and ensure that community funds are utilised wisely. "We are committed to being good stewards of taxpayer dollars even in the face of this challenging economy," Dr. Jones said in an interview with Douglas County Government.
The Board of Commissioners is inviting community members to voice their opinions and concerns at the upcoming Millage Rate hearings, opportunities for public engagement, and discourse on how the county's financial future will shape up – with hearing dates set for Monday, August 11, Tuesday, August 19 at 10 AM, and an additional session on the same day at 6 PM. With eyes fixed on the outcome of these discussions the Board's decisive vote to seal the fate of the 2025 millage rate will take place during the legislative meeting on August 19, right on the heels of the last public hearing, this decision will indicate how the county plans to navigate its fiscal waters in the year ahead and what residents can expect to contribute to the collective coffers.
