El Paso Community College (EPCC) is leveling up its game when it comes to prepping future nurses for the trials of the healthcare industry. According to EPCC News, the Student Success tutoring staff organized a math workshop aimed squarely at sharpening the calculation skills nursing students will depend on to deliver accurate patient care. This August 19th event at the Rio Grande campus welcomed over 100 students to dive into the world of dimensional analysis calculations, a crucial aspect of their forthcoming profession.
The workshops were designed not only to teach but to genuinely empower the aspiring nurses. With hands-on practice sessions, attendees were taught common conversion formulas and the skills to confidently tackle unit conversions and dosage instructions, mistakes in which can have dire consequences. "It's a tradition, held prior to fall and spring semesters. In just one day, we supported over 100 nursing students, helping them get ahead and refresh their skills before the start of the semester," said Lucia Rodriguez, EPCC Director of Student Success, as per EPCC News. The aim is straightforward: to build trust not only in the knowledge they gain but also in the application of that knowledge when lives are in the balance.
The session took place over four separate workshops, urging students to break down complex problems and approach them systematically. These are more than just mathematics; they are life-saving computations. The Rio Grande Tutoring Center's computer lab was also made available, providing the ideal environment for students to connect with the material deeply and collaborate effectively. As EPCC's Office of Student Success proudly declares, its goal is to usher each student from entry to completion with top-tier academic support.
