At least one person is dead after a two-vehicle crash closed a portion of Socorro Road in El Paso County on Sunday, with officials saying the area would remain closed for an extended period while investigators worked the scene. The crash happened along the 11900 block of Socorro Road.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office confirmed the fatality, according to ktsm.com, which reported that at least one person died following the crash. The outlet noted the collision involved two vehicles and happened along the 11900 block of Socorro Road, with the Sheriff's Office's Special Traffic Investigators dispatched to examine the scene. Officials did not release the identity of the person killed, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
As reported by kvia.com, images from the scene showed two vehicles severely damaged. The station reported that no other individuals were taken to the hospital for injuries beyond the person who died. The closed section of roadway begins at the intersection of Thompson and Socorro roads, per the same account, and officials said the area would remain closed for an extended period while the investigation was conducted.
Drivers Told to Seek Alternate Routes
Motorists were urged to avoid the area entirely while crews and investigators worked the scene. KTSM's report quoted officials asking the public to seek alternate routes and expect delays as the closure dragged on. Authorities said additional information would be released as it became available, though no timeline was given for when the road might reopen.
This marks at least the second deadly crash on Socorro Road in less than a week. Just days earlier, on Oct. 28, a 19-year-old motorcyclist named Raul Alberto Sias died after crashing into the back of a pickup truck in the 9800 block of the same roadway, according to elpasotimes.com. That crash happened around 3:30 a.m., and police said speed was a factor; both lanes were closed at Vallarta Drive before reopening around 10:30 a.m.
A Stretch of Road With a Troubled History
The El Paso Times also reported that the Oct. 28 death was the 56th traffic-related fatality in El Paso this year, a figure that matches the total recorded at the same point in 2025. Socorro Road itself has seen repeated fatal wrecks in recent years. In June 2025, motorcyclist Filbert Candelaria was fatally injured in a collision involving a motorcycle and a Nissan passenger vehicle in the 11100 block of the road, as Hoodline reported at the time. Passengers in the Nissan reportedly were not injured in that earlier crash.
Sunday's crash remains under investigation, and officials have not released further details about what led to the collision or who was involved. The Sheriff's Office said updates would follow as the investigation progresses, but as of now, the circumstances surrounding the fatal wreck remain unclear.
