A tense standoff on Interstate 95 in Florida came to a deadly conclusion earlier this week when authorities shot and killed a man suspected of homicide following a police maneuver and hours of negotiation. As NBC Miami reports, the incident began when deputies responded to a shooting at an apartment on Glenwood Drive in West Palm Beach, where they discovered 58-year-old Liliana Calderon Ramirez had been shot. She later died at the hospital.
The suspect fled the scene in a black SUV, and authorities pursued him onto I-95 where the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, Florida Highway Patrol, and Martin County Sheriff's Office were able to halt his vehicle using a PIT maneuver. The man then presented a firearm, and authorities closed the interstate between Orange Avenue and Okeechobee Road as the standoff ensued. According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, the suspect "advanced toward deputies with a firearm," which led them to use "less lethal munitions" before ultimately shooting him dead.
Meanwhile, the West Palm Beach community is grappling with the loss of Ramirez, described by friends and neighbors as a "sweet woman" and "great mom." According to a WPBF report, Ramirez was trying to distance herself from her ex-partner, the man killed during the I-95 standoff. Heartfelt tributes have poured in for Ramirez, who lived with her daughter, present at the time of her death.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro commented on the situation, stating, "This was a tragic and emotionally charged situation, but our deputies and troopers acted with professionalism, courage, and discipline in the face of a dangerous and armed suspect.” The man's name has not been disclosed, and as of now, officials have not provided a motive for the confrontation that took Ramirez's life.
