
A former gymnastics coach from Key Biscayne, Oscar Olea, aged 40, accepted a plea deal today, just days ahead of when his trial was expected to start, pleading guilty to a series of felony sex charges. The charges include two counts of lewd and lascivious battery or sexual activity with a minor and two counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, as reported by WSVN.
Olea, who taught gymnastics at several institutions such as the Key Biscayne Community Church, the Key Biscayne Presbyterian School’s Crossbridge Church campus, and the Village of Key Biscayne Community Center was arrested on February 28, 2024, after surrendering to the police he was accused of the abuse that allegedly took place between 2009 and 2012 according to Local10. Detectives believe there may be additional victims and have encouraged anyone with more information to come forward.
The plea agreement with Miami-Dade County prosecutors will see Olea serve 12 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation, with the added requirement that he register as a sex offender post-release. While the full terms of the plea deal have been disclosed, Olea's sentencing hearing is pending.
