Over the weekend, nearly 500 pre-filled backpacks found their ways into the hands of eager students as part of an annual giveaway event at Western High School. The community initiative was once again boosted by the involvement of Jon Feliciano, a former NFL player and Western High alum. According to Local10, the giveaway included school supplies, snacks, and other essentials, aimed at equipping students from the school's zone for the upcoming academic year.

Running back to his roots, Feliciano, who recently hung up his cleats after a decade in the league, told Local10 about the special meaning this event holds for him. "It’s very special. This place gave me a lot growing up. For four years I spent 12 hours of the day at this place and it kept me out of trouble, they fed me (and) taught me how to be a man," said Feliciano. His efforts aim to ease the burdens faced by parents when preparing for their children's educational needs.

The distribution event, which took place today, was facilitated by the Western High School Auditorium. The school is located at 1200 S.W. 136th Ave. in Davie, Florida. Students from Flamingo, Fox Trail and Silver Ridge elementary schools, and Indian Ridge Middle School were invited to choose from the backpacks on a first-come, first-served basis, as reported by Broward County Public Schools district news.

The generosity seen at Western High School this weekend, Jon Feliciano's fifth such giveaway, reflects an ongoing commitment to community and education. Excited to play a role in enriching the lives of young students, Feliciano explained to Broward County Public Schools district news, "I'm excited to host my fifth backpack event. I see so much of myself in these kids, and I'm thrilled to do what I can to ensure they start the year off right."
