Over 400 eager young minds at Campestre Elementary School are sporting new backpacks filled with school supplies this year, thanks to the generosity of GECU. The financial institution's initiative reached out to 15 schools across El Paso and New Mexico, instilling excitement and easing burdens for families gearing up for a new academic year. As reported by Socorro ISD, the distribution event at Campestre took place during the school's open house on August 1.

The move by GECU has been celebrated as more than just a charitable effort; it's seen as an integral part in leveling the playing field for students. "We know that it benefits the students when they start the year right with all the tools and resources that they need," Linda Nuñez, director of GECU’s Youth Community Programs, told Socorro ISD. Indeed, with every one of the 480 children enrolled at Campestre receiving these high-quality, age-appropriate backpacks, there's a palpable sense of a fair start to the academic journey.

It's not just about having sleek, cheetah print backpacks to choose from, although third-grader Emmarose Guzman certainly appreciated the variety. "For the people that can't afford it, this is really helpful,” Guzman remarked, as obtained by Socorro ISD. The significance reverberates beyond the school's walls; parents like Alexis Alonzo see it as a true community uplift. "I thought it was really great that they're giving back to the community, and that they're impacting our kids this way," Alonzo praised.
