Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has posthumously awarded the Governor's Medal of Freedom to five emblematic Floridians, including the late singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and four former politicians, each leaving their indelible mark on the state. NBC Miami reports that DeSantis emphasized the significance of their contributions, saying, "I’m proud to recognize the legacies of these great Floridians. Our state is better for their contributions, and we’re proud they called Florida home."
Among the honorees was Buffett, who passed away in 2023 at age 76, renowned as much for anthems like "Margaritaville" as for his business ventures that extended his brand into restaurants and resorts. Fox News highlighted that "His legacy continues to influence music and culture in Florida’s coastal communities." The honor also went to Lincoln Diaz-Balart, a staunch opponent of communism and an advocate for a free Cuba, who died earlier in the year at 70.
Beyond the world of melodies and business, the award also acknowledged the careers of politicians who shaped Florida's legislative and educational landscapes. Bob Graham, a former governor and U.S. senator, died last year at 87 and was celebrated for his dedication to education, environmental conservation, and national security. Buddy MacKay, the state’s last Democratic governor before his death at 91 last year, was recognized for his extensive service, which spanned various political offices and a role as U.S. special envoy for the Americas.
John Thrasher, who died earlier this year at 81, was also among the honored. His career included tenures as Florida State University's president, a legislative leader, and head of the state's GOP. In a statement obtained by NBC Miami, DeSantis said, The five awardees "exemplified what it means to be a great Floridian,” and left a lasting impact on their state.
