Gov. JB Pritzker is rolling out a hefty $16.4 million for road refurbishments at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, promising revamps to the historic locale treasured by the southern Illinois community. Part of the larger "Rebuild Illinois" funding effort, Pritzker's administration has already pumped over $30 million into initiatives to spruce up the venue. This hefty sum, along with an additional $21.7 million from the Du Quoin Buildings and Grounds team, totals north of $50 million in investments aimed at overhauling the fairgrounds, which sprawl across 750 acres.
Amplifying the impacts of these improvements, Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, lauded the project for addressing "decades of deferred maintenance" and propelling the fairgrounds closer toward their peak form. "Thanks to the leadership of Governor Pritzker and the Rebuild Illinois initiative, we’ve been able to address decades of deferred maintenance and work toward restoring the fairgrounds to their full potential," Costello stated, highlighting the grounds' importance as an economic driver in the region. With a roster of enhancements that spans from new facilities for equine friends to the rejuvenation of the Expo Building's restrooms, the fairgrounds now flaunt signs of progression that beckon visitors back, as reported by Illinois.gov.
An overhaul of this magnitude isn't just for show; it's a nod to both history and function. Guests will now encounter various upgrades, such as new horse paddocks, barns, and docks, alongside renovated grandstands and an expanded entrance at Gate 3 that promises smoother access. Not just thinking of the human visitors, the fairgrounds have also seen the installation of pollinator plots to bolster local biodiversity, signaling a commitment to both cultural and ecological vitality.
While there remains work to be completed, the fairgrounds' manager, Luke Davison, points out the undeniable headway made, "While some work remains to be done, the progress is unmistakable, and the grounds have never looked better," he exclaimed. The upgrades reflect a concerted effort to elevate the fair experience and honor the historic value the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds holds, he told Illinois.gov.
