A violent encounter in West Miami-Dade has left a woman critically injured and a gunman dead following a shootout with deputies. The incident occurred yesterday at the Monte Carlo Apartments, located just south of State Road 836. Deputies were dispatched to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls about shots being fired, as reported by NBC6.
On arrival, law enforcement found a woman with a gunshot wound to her upper body. "Deputies were able to extricate the female, and fire rescue transported her to the hospital," said officials, according to an NBC6 news briefing. Subsequently, deputies were guided to the gunman's location on the fourth floor by witnesses. An altercation ensued, resulting in gunfire exchange between the armed man and three deputies.
The officials took a tactical retreat and awaited the arrival of the Special Response Team, Eric Garcia, a spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, conveyed in a statement obtained by CBS News Miami. The team, upon their arrival, swept the apartment and found the suspect deceased.
Amidst the chaos neighbors reported hearing the gunshots, prompting immediate fear and caution. One resident's daughter who was in a nearby building heard the gunfire and contacted her mother. "I heard like boom boom boom, like a shooting and I said, go to the bathroom or go inside the closet, lock yourself. And then she goes, okay, okay, but she was really scary," the woman told CBS News Miami. Details on whether the suspect forced entry into the apartment or the relationship between him, and the injured woman remains scarce.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation, a standard protocol for incidents involving officer-related shootings. The condition of the injured woman, who was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, is still reported as critical.
