With National Suicide Prevention Month upon us, the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) is bringing attention to a somber issue with the launch of two public service announcements (PSAs) aimed at curbing the high rates of veteran suicide. The state's push to raise awareness includes a 30-second and a 60-second spot, introduced by IDVA Director Terry Prince, who highlights essential resources for veterans and their families.

According to data revealed in the PSAs, veterans are facing a suicide rate that is 71.8% higher than that of non-veteran adults in the U.S. Urgency is underscored by the staggering figure that, since the start of the Global War on Terror, over 30,000 military personnel and post-9/11 conflict veterans have died by suicide. This is in stark contrast to the 7,000 U.S. service members who have died in combat during the same period. The PSAs detail support options, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, where veterans can find a lifeline by calling 988 and pressing 1, texting 838255, or engaging in an online chat.

"We all have a role in preventing veteran suicide, and I invite everyone across the state to join the crusade in raising awareness and providing support to veterans in crisis," said IDVA Director Terry Prince, in a statement that was part of the PSA release. As the PSAs circulate throughout Illinois, the IDVA's message is clear: fostering connections and highlighting accessible help can turn the tide in this battle.
