Northeast Indiana farms were in the spotlight recently as the Hoosier Homestead awards recognized them for their enduring contributions to agriculture and the local economy, according to state legislators who hailed the farming families' efforts. "Supporting our farming families is key to sustaining Indiana's economic strength," State Rep. Ben Smaltz said, praising the dedication of these longstanding agricultural operations.

Held at the Indiana State Fair, the award ceremony included multiple generations of farmers where, including the Carnahan, Kile, and Simmons families, the Hoosier Homestead awards honor farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years with distinct honors. Notably, the Carnahan Farm received the centennial award for their service since 1917, while both the Kile Farm, active since 1875, and the Simmons Farm, dating back to 1851, were honored with sesquicentennial awards. "Generational farming takes commitment, sacrifice and long hours behind the scenes," stated Rep. David Abbott.

Since 1976, Indiana has recognized over 6,000 farms that have contributed both economically and culturally to the state through the Hoosier Homestead Award Program. This tradition, now embedded in the rhythm of spring and summer, serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of family-owned farms in the region.

Reflecting the importance of these awards and their recipients, State Sen. Sue Glick mentioned, "For generations, Hoosier farm families have worked tirelessly to boost our economy and protect our agricultural land." As reported by the families who received honors, they were among 95 awardees celebrated this year for their determined preservation and enhancement of Indiana's farming heritage. State Sen. Justin Busch also contributed to the chorus of accolades, affirming his commitment to support these stalwart farming families so that their operations can continue to grow and thrive.
