Jacklyn Gise Bezos, mother of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has died at the age of 78 after a battle with Lewy body dementia. Jeff Bezos shared on Instagram that she passed away surrounded by family, Local10 reported.
According to NBC News, the Bezos Scholars Program confirmed she died at her home in Miami. The Mayo Clinic describes Lewy body dementia as the second-most common type of dementia after Alzheimer’s, with symptoms such as memory loss, hallucinations, confusion, and slowed movement.
Jacklyn Bezos was born in Washington, D.C., and later moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she gave birth to Jeff Bezos at age 17. She later married Mike Bezos, a Cuban immigrant, and together they raised Jeff, Christina, and Mark.
At 45, she returned to school and earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Elizabeth University. She co-founded the Bezos Family Foundation in 2000 and the Bezos Scholars Program in 2005, focusing on educational leadership.
Her death comes shortly after Jeff Bezos’ wedding to Lauren Sánchez.
