A Key Largo man has found himself on the wrong side of the law after partaking in a peculiar heist. Leland Kevin Broome, 58, was arrested yesterday following an incident that occurred over the weekend, where he was reportedly caught on camera stealing not just beverages and hot dogs, but also a YETI cooler from a local residence. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has charged him with burglary and theft in connection with the incident.
Deputies were called to a home on the 95000 block of the Overseas Highway in Key Largo last Saturday. According to WSVN, the house's security footage clearly displayed Broome, who easily to be identified by law enforcement due to prior run-ins, helping himself to items from the homeowner’s refrigerator and a cooler. This all took place in the residence's carport.
Upon examination of the surveillance video evidence, warrants were quickly issued for Broome's arrest. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office apprehended him yesterday, making sure to categorically book him for the alleged crimes. Broome has since been processed into jail, where he will await further legal proceedings.
Details about the items stolen, including the YETI cooler—which commands a hefty price tag for its ability to keep contents cold for extended periods—were shared in a Facebook post by the Florida Keys Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of surveillance systems in competing with crime, noting how this latest case was quickly resolved due to the clear imagery of the suspect during the act.
At present time, it remains unclear whether Broome has secured legal representation or if a date for his first court appearance has been set.
