A deadly encounter took place this weekend in El Cajon where two men clashed in what would culminate in a tragic loss. According to the City of El Cajon's official news announcement, the confrontation unfolded yesterday around 5:30 PM in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the 900 block of S. Sunshine. The sequence of events led to one man stabbing another, resulting in severe injuries that, despite medical interventions, proved fatal.
The police rapidly apprehended 29-year-old Steven Matthews of La Mesa at the scene — a man with a history deeply marred by violence and previous arrests, which include assault with a deadly weapon and firearm charges. As the aftermath of violence gives way to investigation, the El Cajon Police Department has yet to publicly identify the 59-year-old victim from El Cajon, choosing to withhold his name out of respect and due process.
As the community wrestles with the all too familiar demons of violence, the police have encouraged anyone with additional insights into the incident to step forward. Information can be a beacon, and those who possess it are urged to contact the El Cajon Police Department at 619-579-3311. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be directed to Crime Stoppers at their website.
