Almost a year and a half after being ravaged by a flood, the Lemon Grove Sheriff's Substation has finally reopened its doors to the public. The substation, which is situated at 3240 Main Street, celebrated its return to operational status with a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony. According to an announcement by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Kelly Martinez and Mayor Alysson Snow of Lemon Grove were among the key figures presiding over the event.
In January 2024, Lemon Grove was significantly impacted by extensive rain across San Diego County, resulting in 24 inches of water wreaking havoc on the facility. As described in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department's release, deputies and staff had to relocate to the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station in Spring Valley following the destruction. Despite the upheaval, patrol operations in Lemon Grove continued unabated.
Restorations to the Sheriff's Substation cost over $1 million and took approximately 19 months to complete. Staff returned to the familiar confines of the substation in mid-July of 2025. "I'm so grateful for the tenacity and resilience of my team, including Lemon Grove Sheriff's Substation Lieutenant Joe Barry's leadership. This really epitomizes who the San Diego County Sheriff's Office is," Sheriff Martinez told local representatives. "We serve our communities and we do it very well. Thank you to the City of Lemon Grove."
The City of Lemon Grove has been commended for working closely with the Sheriff's Office to manage the repairs, ensuring a swift and successful facility renewal. Mayor Snow presented Sheriff Martinez with a proclamation at the event, marking the significant milestone for the local law enforcement and community. "We are excited to welcome our deputies and everyone in the Sheriff's Office home," Mayor Snow said via the San Diego County Sheriff's Department news release, as she stressed their unwavering commitment to quality service. Lt. Barry echoed this sentiment: "There was no point where these deputies did not continue to give this community the best public safety services that they always do."
Appreciation was also extended to Heartland Fire & Rescue, Seal Furniture, and various local associations and churches that supported the station during its time of need, as indicated by the officials during the ceremony. Contributions such as furniture donations and providing food and refreshments by these partners highlighted the community's and its stakeholders' solidarity in the face of adversity. The Sheriff's Office has a long-standing relationship with the City of Lemon Grove, having provided law enforcement services since its incorporation in 1977, and the reestablishment of the substation strengthens this bond.
