A German Shepherd named Bella, who found herself stranded in a Fort Lauderdale canal, has been rescued and reunited with her original owners after a five-year separation. As WSVN reports, the dog was retrieved by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue yesterday morning and was identified thanks to her chip, leading to an emotional reunion with her family.
The story of Bella began in 2018 when she was first adopted by the Nicholson family. After their house burned down, they stayed in a hotel and eventually had to hand Bella to a friend. This friend, in turn, gave Bella away, leading to years of unsuccessful attempts to locate her. The family, now based in Central Florida, got word of Bella's rescue when Fort Lauderdale Police contacted them, “We love our dog and we are just happy that she is coming home today,” Lisa Nicholson expressed in relief, “Only god can do that and I believe it was a god miracle because it started with a dream and the dream came true two days later," she recalled to WSVN.
Meanwhile, CBS Miami illuminates the vital role 911 callers played in Bella's rescue. Captain David Landers of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue hailed these individuals as the true heroes, “A life's a life. Whether it's an animal, whether it's a person," Landers emphasized. The canine was saved from potential road accidents before falling into the canal thanks to alert citizens Fede Skinner and Aisha Fahmy, who notified authorities of the impending danger.
According to Lt. Mason McConchie, one of Bella's rescuers, the dog was “docile, very frail” when they found her. The firefighters successfully retrieved Bella from the canal, avoiding a potential tragedy that was all too close, with Skinner admitting, "It's pretty scary because at some point the dog was in the middle of the road. And there was like three different cars that almost hit it. It was kind of terrifying, to be honest." After the harrowing experience, Bella's family plans to shower her with love and care back in Central Florida, a fitting new chapter after her unexpected adventure, as noted by CBS Miami.
