The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has announced a significant discount for honorably discharged military veteran residents. Beginning today, August 1, these veterans can purchase a recreational hunting and fishing combination license at an 80% discount, bringing the cost down to $20 from the previous $100 Sportsman’s Paradise license price. The "Resident Honorably Discharged Hunt/Fish Combo" license is a result of Act 321, a recently passed piece of legislation that was part of LDWF's 2025 legislative package.

Championed by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, the bill garnered legislative passage during the 2025 session. It was very much pushed forward under the guidance of Sen. Brach Myers. According to LDWF, this license aims to encourage veteran residents to not only enjoy the natural riches of Louisiana but to consider the state as their permanent home after service. The LDWF already offers several discounts for active and former members of the U.S. Armed Services, but this new law broadens that horizon, making the discount available to a wider group of veterans.

"As a military veteran, I consider it a tremendous honor to offer this discount to the brave men and women who proudly served our country," LDWF Secretary Tyler Bosworth told LDWF. "We would like to thank Governor Landry, the Louisiana Legislature, the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, and The Boot for their support of this new law," he added.

Charlton Meginley, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, remarked on the department’s mission and vision pertaining to veterans' welfare. "It is our vision to make Louisiana the most veteran-friendly state in the nation, and legislation expanding benefits helps us move toward that goal," Meginley stated on LDWF. The legislation spans beyond a show of gratitude, reaching into the practicalities of delivering on promises owed to these individuals who served the nation with distinction.

Eligibility for the discounted license requires bona fide residency in Louisiana and an honorable discharge from any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Louisiana Army National Guard or the Louisiana Air National Guard. Applicants are expected to provide identification and suitable proof of their military service. Forms of proof accepted include government-issued separation and discharge documentation, such as a DD-214 or NGB-22.
