The pursuit of immigration enforcement marked another chapter as Marco Gomez-Arguello, a 36-year-old Mexican national, faced sentencing after his guilty plea to the charge of illegal reentry of a removed alien. The announcement came from Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

After being deported on October 28, 2013, and later returning to the United States, Gomez-Arguello’s case concluded on August 7 before U.S. District Judge Barry W. Ashe. The judge, taking into account the time Gomez-Arguello had already served, ordered only that time to count, along with a year of supervised release and a nominal $100 special assessment fee.

The work of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) New Orleans Field Office was highlighted by Simpson in connection with Gomez-Arguello's indictment and sentence, showcasing the ongoing effort by federal agencies to clamp down on the systemic issue of illegal border crossings and the challenges posed by repeat offenders who navigate back into the United States following removal.

Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit handled the prosecution of Gomez-Arguello's case. This work is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that coordinates the resources of the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) to address the threats posed by these illegal activities.
