Miami-Dade County has added a prestigious accolade to its collection, with the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) being recognized by the National Association of Counties (NACo) for their work in safeguarding local history. The NACo Achievement Award was granted to OHP's History Collaborative program, an initiative launched in 2023 with the vision to intertwine historic preservation with community resilience. According to a statement from Miami-Dade County, this program attracts citizens to actively partake in preserving the narratives and landmarks pivotal to their heritage.

The effort is a collective one, as OHP has teamed up with Miami-Dade Public Library System Digital Collections Department and HistoryMiami to craft a space where stories and memories can be passed forward. Taking place in May to coincide with National Historic Preservation month, the program ambitiously sets out to not only catalog the past but to continuously engage with a designated community in Miami-Dade County. By capturing oral histories and digitizing community-contributed materials, the History Collaborative seeks to ensure that a spectrum of local traditions and tales are maintained accessible for all.

This communal treasure trove features the personal narratives of residents, documents, and photos submitted for digitization, and recordings obtained through HistoryMiami's mobile story booth. All of these autobiographical pieces join together to form the mosaic of Miami-Dade's vivid past, made available for anyone to explore online.

Embracing the duality of conserving both the physical and ephemeral, the program numbers among the few that aspire to holistically honor the full spectrum of heritage existing within a community. The impact is a twofold victory: a testament to Miami-Dade's devotion to its roots, and a framework for other municipalities to similarly dare to prioritize cultural preservation. In a statement on Miami-Dade County's official website, the ambition behind the initiative is clear, aiming to "better understand and preserve the people, places and stories that shape Miami-Dade’s heritage."
