A man lost his life after a shooting in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood early this morning. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office reported receiving calls about the incident just after 4 a.m., in the vicinity of NW 18 Avenue and NW 66 Street. Deputies arrived on the scene to find the victim with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite being transported to an area hospital, he did not survive the injuries, the Sheriff's Office confirmed in a statement obtained by NBC Miami.
Local residents were disturbed by the early morning violence. One man, who heard the shots but did not immediately recognize them as out of the ordinary, expressed the jarring sensation of the morning's disruption. "When I got up to go use the bathroom I heard a shot, but I didn't really pay attention to it because I was in the house. I laid back down. When I got up again to come outside to go to the store, it was roped off," he said, in a statement obtained by CBS Miami.
The man who passed away was a familiar face in the neighborhood, described by a resident, “He cool, he likes to crack jokes, he had a good spirit, so I feel like whoever did this -- that’s messed up,” according to an interview with Local 10 News.
Authorities have yet to release the name of the man killed or information on a potential suspect. The investigation is ongoing as the Sheriff's homicide detectives are working to determine what could have led to this fatal shooting. Anyone with information pertinent to the shooting is encouraged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
