A tragedy struck in East Nashville this past weekend as a block party on Oakwood Avenue devolved into chaos when gunfire broke out around 11:15 p.m. last Saturday night. Nevaeh Wilson, a 20-year-old Nashville resident, found herself caught in the crossfire and ultimately paid with her life.
According to a report from the Nashville Police Department, the scene extended over a block, from 2405 Oakwood Avenue to 2608 Oakwood Avenue. In an attempt to escape the shooting, Wilson was hit in the lower back and later pronounced dead after being rushed to Skyline Medical Center—another casualty in a nation too often punctuated by gunfire and grief.
The same incident left a 24-year-old male injured. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with wounds that were said to be non-life threatening. Despite the pressing questions and the hunt for answers, he remained tight-lipped about the circumstances of his injuries.
Party-goers said the night was fun until it was suddenly disrupted by gunfire. It’s still unclear why the peaceful gathering turned violent. Investigators are working hard to review witness statements and put the pieces together.
