The U.S. Navy is currently investigating an incident that led to the death of a sailor this week at the Naval Station Great Lakes, as confirmed by a Navy spokesperson. According to reports by NBC Chicago, the tragedy occurred on Wednesday, but details surrounding the death have been kept under wraps while next of kin are notified.
While the sailor's identity has not yet been disclosed, it has been confirmed that the death followed a "gunfire incident." A large police response was noted at the North Chicago facility, with officers apparently surrounding the USS Missouri building, as per ABC7 Chicago. The Lake County coroner informed ABC7 that the male sailor died at the scene, his life prematurely ending at 1:45 p.m. due to the incident.
"The Navy is providing full support to the family, friends, and shipmates affected by this tragic loss," a spokesperson said in a statement obtained by NBC Chicago. "Out of respect for the family and to preserve the integrity of the investigative process, no further details will be released at this time." Naval Station Great Lakes holds the reputation as the Navy’s only boot camp, and according to its website, is the largest military base in Illinois with more than 20,000 military personnel.
Emergency services, including an ambulance, were visible at the scene via overhead footage captured by Chopper 7 on Wednesday afternoon. The Naval Station Great Lakes serves as a significant training installation for recruits in the Navy, having a crucial role in preparing sailors for service, according to an official statement.
