A North Miami couple faces charges of child neglect after authorities found their two children in a state of severe malnutrition. Gabrielle Milfort, 32, and Charmy Milfort, 34, were arrested Wednesday with their children being placed under the custody of medical professionals, as confirmed by the North Miami Police Department.
A Department of Children and Families (DCF) investigator initially reported the couple's neglect to police, leading to the arrest. According to NBC Miami, the investigation began on June 24 when a DCF investigator took custody of the children, aged 7 and 4. The investigator indicated that the children were poorly fed, had not seen a doctor since 2022, and were not enrolled in school.
The seven-year-old, found to be non-verbal and still in diapers, was severely malnourished and not toilet trained. "The 7-year-old was found to be non-verbal, severely malnourished, not trained to use the bathroom and still wearing diapers," stated the arrest reports obtained by NBC Miami. The four-year-old weighed only 15 pounds in June and suffered from constipation due to dehydration along with a fractured arm and leg.
Details from the arrest report also highlighted the parents' financial decisions, noting that in January, "the defendant and co-defendant leased a apartment that was furnished, and they financed a vehicle in February 2025." This was mentioned to underline that the funds could have assisted in the children's medical care. Information regarding the children's improved health since being under medical care was also shared, as noted by NBC Miami.
Local reactions to the case were documented by WPLG Local 10, whose report was used by authorities to alert the community about the ongoing situation. The station identified the couple and summarized the DCF's involvement. The Milforts were booked into jail and awaited a bond court hearing on Thursday.
