Residents of the Oakland neighborhood are on alert after a series of burglaries have been reported in the 2nd (Wentworth) District. According to a community alert from the Chicago Police Department, an unknown individual has forcefully entered apartment buildings and has proceeded to damage and steal from vending and laundry machines.
The burglaries occurred over several days, with the first incident on the 3600 block of S. Lake Park Ave. between August 5, at 5:30 p.m., and August 6, at 12 p.m. Subsequent incidents have been reported on August 9 at 5:30 a.m., August 10 at 5:20 a.m., and on the 1000 block of E. 41st Pl. on August 11 at 4:20 a.m. The offender is described to potentially be an African-American male, aged 25-35, between 5'4"and -5'9" in height, and weighing around 160-175 lbs.
The Chicago Police Department has issued recommendations to help residents better protect their homes. These include keeping properties well-lit, securing doors and windows, repairing any structural damage promptly, and reporting suspicious activities to the police without delay. They've also stressed the importance of preserving any video surveillance evidence if available by saving a copy for detectives to help aid in the investigation.
For those who are unfortunate enough to become victims of burglary, the advisory insists on the importance of not disturbing the crime scene and promptly calling the police. "If you are a victim do not touch anything, call police immediately," the notice states. The department also encourages witnesses to provide contact information if approached by individuals seeking details about the incidents. By taking these measures, residents and law enforcement hope to curb the recent upsurge in burglaries and eventually apprehend the culprit responsible for these crimes.
