A fatal collision in rural Putnam County resulted in one casualty and multiple injuries on Monday afternoon. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office confirms that the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Illinois Route 18 and County Highway 1150 East. A vehicle driven by 27-year-old Anthony A. Herrera from Cresthill, attempting to pass several vehicles, collided head-on with another vehicle, according to an account by Central Illinois Proud.
Herrera was driving eastbound on Route 18 as Mary T. Fitzmaurice, 67, of Downers Grove, was coming from the opposite direction, driving a woman from Downers Grove. Both drivers were airlifted to OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center for treatment, as reported by 25 News Now. A passenger in Herrera's vehicle, Rivera Vasquez, age 38, was taken to OSF Healthcare Center for Health in Streator by ambulance.
The collision tragically claimed the life of 42-year-old Elvis Escobar of Romeoville, who was also a passenger in Herrera's car and pronounced deceased at the scene. Multiple emergency response teams, including the Magnolia Fire Department and various EMS units, provided assistance following the crash.
While the investigation is ongoing, led by the Illinois State Police and the sheriff's office, details around the circumstances of the accident remain under scrutiny. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Lostant EMS, Varna EMS, and the Putnam County death investigator, driving to serve the community in a time marked by the sudden rupture of routine life. Efforts from the Illinois Department of Transportation, LifeFlight, and local fire departments were key to the emergency response.
