In a recent court proceeding, Orlando-area physician Thomas Wentzell received a 12-year prison term after entering a no-contest plea for the second-degree murder of his wife. Wentzell, who was discovered at home with the body of Linda Wentzell in December, was taken into custody following an investigation that cast doubt on his initial statements to the Windermere Police Department.
Officers who responded to the scene cited inconsistencies in Wentzell's account of events, according to WESH. The Windermere Police Department was quick to identify the need "for a thorough investigation based on initial observations, witness statements, and the overall circumstances at the scene." It was during this period of heightened scrutiny that Wentzell reached out to the Ocoee Police Department, appearing to have quickly unraveled the truth of what had transpired in his home that fatal evening.
The case took a turn when Wentzell contacted the Ocoee Police Department, revealing his suicidal ideations and confessing to the murder of his wife. According to the police, the doctor declared he "deserved to die" as a result of his actions. A neighbor painted a picture of the couple's life to WFTV, stating, "It’s a very quiet community. The only arguments that I’ve ever heard has came out of that house," as per their report.
During the earlier police response to the Wentzell residence, Thomas Wentzell was discovered alone in the home alongside his unresponsive wife. At that point, he had visible cuts, bruises, and abrasions over his body, which he initially claimed to have been from playing with the family pet. Nonetheless, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by WESH, these injuries were "consistent with defense wounds from an altercation." This detail, along with Wentzell's subsequent admission, surely helped to solidify his connection to the crime quickly.
The sentence takes into account the 245 days Wentzell has already spent in custody and also includes a mandate to pay $518 in court costs.
