A slice of Indiana's farming heritage was recently spotlighted with the Meyer Farm in Pike County being bestowed the Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award, a recognition for its continuous operation since 1895. The award, which was highlighted in an announcement by State Rep. Cindy Ledbetter (R-Newburgh) and State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper), praises the endurance and legacy of Indiana farm families feeding not just a state but the world at large.
"Indiana farm families have been feeding the world for generations, and we honor them with Hoosier Homestead awards," said Ledbetter, placing importance on their hard work and commitment to agriculture through these longstanding awards. A fifth-generation farmer himself, Schmitt knows the sweat and perseverance embedded in such a legacy. "This family has worked hard from generation to generation and I congratulate them on earning this great honor," Schmitt told Indiana House Republicans. The Meyer Farm stands as one of 95 recently honored recipients during a ceremony at the Indiana State Fair.
Initiated in 1976, the Hoosier Homestead Award Program distinguishes Indiana farms that have been owned and operated by the same family for a century or more. These awards are given in increments of 100, 150, and 200 years, recognizing the farms with centennial, sesquicentennial, or bicentennial awards respectively for their significant economic and cultural contributions to the state. Having recognized over 6,000 farms since its inception, the program celebrates an enduring commitment to agriculture that has served as a cornerstone for Indiana's growth.
These awards, which serve as a testament to rural resilience and family tradition, are not just ceremonial. They highlight farms' roles as part and parcel of Indiana's fabric, woven through the state's development. Details surrounding the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, including nomination forms, can be sourced from the state's website. Following the spring and summer ceremonial tradition, the deadline for nominations for the upcoming March 2026 ceremony is set for November 1.
