An inmate from Rutherford County who briefly tasted freedom was recaptured just before nightfall on Monday, moments that must have felt like fleeting shadows to the fugitive and pursuers alike. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office confirmed the capture of 43-year-old Joseph Beard, who earlier in the day had walked away from a Correctional Work Center detail on John Bragg Highway. WSMV reported that Beard was involved in a routine trash collection activity before the escape attempt.
Beard, a resident of Dickson, was set to be released from his confinement on a violation of probation charge on the forthcoming date of August 24. However, he now stands to face new charges stemming from an act that can only be properly described as a bid for premature liberty. Residents in the Readyville area were briefly cast into a state of alert, with law enforcement encouraging individuals to securely lock their homes and vehicles. "If you see him, please call 911 immediately. Do not approach him," instructed the RCSO, as cited by a WSMV article.
The coordinated efforts of several agencies, including the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, the Murfreesboro Police Department, K-9 units, drones, and a helicopter from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, culminated in the swift recapture of Beard. Rutherford County Sheriff's Lt. Derek Oeser provided reassurance to the public soon after, stating, "there is no longer any threat to Readyville residents." Beard is now back in custody at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, information which was confirmed by several sources, including WZTV.
The multi-agency manhunt indeed came to a decisive end, a testament to the efficacy of collaborative law enforcement efforts. "Sheriff's deputies are searching with K9 and drones in the Readyville area," the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office had reported earlier in the search phase, as reported by WSMV news. The RCSO went on to credit the THP, Cannon County Sheriff's Office, and Murfreesboro police for their help in locating and apprehending Beard. This collaborative spirit, although an essential element of justice's reach, will likely only add to the weight of Beard's consequences once he is to face the reverberations of his momentary flight.
