Commuters in San Francisco can expect to soon navigate an evolved public transit landscape as Muni implements service changes aimed at addressing crowded buses and improving commuter connections. As per the SFMTA, alterations to several bus routes will commence on August 30 for weekend service, with weekday enhancements following on September 2.
The adjustments are being made to strategically improve the daily commute for both schoolchildren and downtown workers. Particularly, the 1X California Express will see the restoration of two morning downtown trips that had been previously cut. Riders will now be able to catch buses leaving 33rd Ave & Geary Blvd at 7:15 AM and 7:45 AM, adding to the existing morning schedule to accommodate the early rush better.
The 30X Marina Express is getting a new morning trip in the Marina district. Starting September 2, this line will offer an added departure at 8:15 AM from Beach St & Divisadero St, which is expected to ease passenger wait times and reduce overcrowding. Changes also include a minor stop adjustment in the area, where the stop at Scott St & North Point St will be eliminated, directing riders to the nearby stop at North Point St & Divisadero St, a mere block away.
To further streamline travel for students, the 49 Van Ness/Mission bus frequency will be bumped up during the critical morning window of 7:30 to 8:15 AM, a move meant to mitigate instances of "pass-ups" when buses reach full capacity. The after-school service is also under the lens, with the 8 Bayshore and 29 Sunset routes receiving adjusted schedules for better reliability during the evening peak hours. Overall, these strategic changes hinge on feedback from rigorous ridership data analysis, input from Muni riders, and drivers' reports of delays and dangerous turn issues.
A slew of stop changes will be implemented alongside the major route adjustments. A new 6 Hayes-Parnassus stop is being inaugurated at Masonic Ave & Oak St, aiming to serve both directions more comprehensively. The 56 Rutland stop at Executive Park & Alana Way is also being moved to enhance access from the Executive Park office buildings.
