The incident began at approximately 6:43 a.m. when officers were dispatched following reports of a man with a machete, later identified as 47-year-old Jared Spegal. Upon arrival, Spegal reportedly "refused to comply," according to SFPD, and subsequently barricaded himself within his third-floor unit. The response escalated when SFFD arrived to assist, with members of Truck 1 successfully removing Spegal from the premises, as detailed in a KRON4 news article.
SFFD's Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) and a hostage negotiation team were also at the scene to aid in safely resolving the situation. The efforts by these teams ensured that no injuries were reported during the standoff or the subsequent arrest. After being taken into custody, Spegal was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation, with charges pending for the incident.
The standoff wasn't the building's only incident that day, as earlier in the morning, around 3 a.m., SFFD responded to a fire on the fourth floor of the Civic Center Residence, according to the same KRON4 report. Two residents were hospitalized for minor injuries from the fire. Further investigations are underway by the SFFD fire investigators to determine whether there is any connection between the fire and the machete incident involving Spegal.
Local authorities have not yet disclosed the motivations behind Spegal's actions. The incident remains under active investigation by the SFPD and SFFD, who are working closely to uncover additional details surrounding this event.
