Tragedy struck this weekend at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah, as emergency crews launched a search for a man who is presumed to have drowned. According to KSL, the distress call came in around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, after two men were observed struggling in the water. One of the men was rescued and is currently hospitalized, while the second man remains missing.
Officials from the Herriman City Police Department confirmed that the incident began when a man, believed to be in his early 20s, went under the water during recreational activities. A bystander, also in his 20s, attempted a rescue but was ultimately pulled from the water and taken to a hospital in unknown condition, as KUTV reported. The current status of the hospitalized man has not been disclosed.
In response to the emergency, the reservoir was closed to the public, and a comprehensive search and rescue effort got underway. Herriman Police Sgt. Greg Shaver told KSL that they were employing boats and a grid system to comb the waters for the missing man. Assisting in the search are dive teams, including those from the Utah Highway Patrol, who were expected to join "in short order" to aid in the operation, according to Unified Fire Capt. Tony Baker.
As night fell, the prospects dimmed for the missing swimmer, with officials deeming the operation a recovery effort. "We are attempting to locate our second swimmer," Baker said, as obtained by Fox 13 Now. Despite the efforts of search crews from Bluffdale and South Jordan, the man's identity has yet to be released, and he is presumed dead.
