The University of Utah is making waves in college football circles with a nation-leading eight players nominated for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year. According to UtahUtes.com, this watchlist is compiled by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame and includes the names of linebacker Levani Damuni, offensive linemen Spencer Fano offensive lineman Caleb Lomu, defensive end Logan Fano, offensive lineman Michael Mokofisi, offensive lineman Tanoa Togiai, and defensive tackles Dallas Vakalahi and Aliki Vimahi.
The award, which is bestowed upon the most outstanding college football player of Polynesian ancestry, assesses players not only for their commanding on-field performances but also their integrity and character off-field. A total of 81 players from 40 different NCAA Division I programs have made it onto the initial list. Utah's history with the award is notable; since 2021, at least one member of the Utah football squad has reached the finalist stage each year, with Spencer Fano achieving the honor in 2024.
The timeline for the accolade's announcement begins with finalists being unveiled on December 9, followed by the big reveal of the award winner on December 16. The selection committee responsible for this decision includes distinguished members such as former Utah head coach and Utah Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Ron McBride, who was also honored in the Ring of Honor in 2025 and is part of the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame.
