The Utah cross country team is poised to embark on its 2025 season with a bang, sprinting into action at the UVU Invitational in Orem, Utah, this Friday, August 29, starting at the crack of 10 a.m., as reported by UtahUtes.com. Competing at Scera Park against teams like Oregon, BYU, and several others, the Utes are diving headlong into the fresh season with hopes to outpace their No. 23 preseason ranking bestowed by the USTFCCCA.
Among the eight Utah athletes competing, familiar faces like Lauren Ayers, Josie Fale, and Bri Rinn are returning to the invitational, drawing from their experience at last year's meet, meanwhile, the squad welcomes Allie Bruce, Claire Le Gallo, and Madi Hulsey, all set to make their cross country debut for the team, with Le Gallo and Hulsey transferring in from Arizona State and Ole Miss, respectively and while Le Gallo showed promise in the indoor season last year, Bruce will make her first collegiate cross country appearance after competing indoors a year ago; Millie Wilcox, a sprinter moving into distance, and Cloe Ruth, a true freshman, are also primed to prove their endurance chops.
Despite losing key veteran runners, the "Women of Utah" are maintaining a steady stride, earning a spot in the preseason rankings for the fourth consecutive season, and one of five teams from the Big 12 to achieve this status, "joining BYU, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Colorado in the top-25," as UtahUtes.com delineates.
Newcomers to the team, such as Madi Hulsey, who is also working towards a master's in biomedical engineering, Emily Junginger from Germany, Rebecca O'Keefe from Sammamish, and Mackenzie Rogers from California, are amplifying squad depth. Rogers is notably a two-time NCAA West Regional qualifier and the latest in a family tradition rich in collegiate athletics. These fresh legs are likely to impact the team dynamics significantly, adding a blend of international experience and proven competitive moxie to the roster. The NCAA Mountain Regionals, a meet notorious for its formidable competition, is slated for a comeback to Salt Lake City later this year, hosted by the University of Utah and scheduled for November 14, offering another checkpoint for the team's prowess.
