Amid ongoing national discussions about redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, Vice President J.D. Vance held a closed-door meeting in Indianapolis with Indiana Governor Mike Braun and other senior state Republicans. The meeting has drawn attention from Democratic leaders, who have expressed concern over potential efforts to solidify Republican influence in Congress, as reported by FOX59.
Gov. Braun, during a short exchange with the press after the meeting, confirmed that redistricting was among the topics discussed, stating the meeting went "pretty good" and that they "listened," as noted by FOX59.
While Democratic lawmakers and protesters at the statehouse voiced concerns, Republican leaders described the meeting as productive. Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston expressed confidence in the collaboration, telling WTHR he was proud to work with the Trump Administration to strengthen the state.
As the discussion continues, Democratic leaders have voiced strong opposition to potential redistricting plans. Rep. André Carson criticized the idea of altering congressional district boundaries, calling it "unethical." He appeared alongside U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan at a press conference where both lawmakers denounced the proposed changes, as per report by FOX59.
According to IndyStar, several demonstrations took place, including sit-ins at the Statehouse and a protest outside the Governor's Residence. Amid the public response, Indiana State Senator Fady Qaddoura stated that he plans to reintroduce legislation aimed at ending gerrymandering in the state. The potential for a special legislative session called by Governor Braun remains, which, if initiated, could open the door to redrawing congressional maps—potentially strengthening Republican representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
