
The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) has appointed Brittany Thompson as the new Director of their Internal Audit team. Possessing a robust 15 years of experience in audit and multiple professional certifications, Thompson advanced in her career within the department since her start in 2013, previously holding the position of Auditor 4, during which time she supported the now-retired Internal Audit Director John G. Williams, as reported by the department on their official website.
TDCI Commissioner Carter Lawrence praised the newly promoted director, emphasizing the importance of her role in sustaining the public’s confidence in the department's operations, Lawrence stated, “During her career, Brittany has demonstrated that she has the knowledge, ability, and commitment to lead the way forward for her team and our Department. I am proud that she will continue her career in State Government here at TDCI by way of this promotion.” Thompson, an alumnus of Middle Tennessee State University with an MBA, a BS in Accounting, has also been certified as both a Certified Internal Auditor and a Certified Fraud Examiner, as noted by the TDCI.
Thompson's promotion comes after the retirement of John G. Williams who served the Tennessee State Government for an impressive 41 years. Her new responsibilities as Director will include leading the internal audit team of four, managing compliance audits, and ensuring the department’s alignment with the Financial Integrity Act, as well as integrating new risk assessment strategies as directed by the Tennessee Department of Finance & Administration.

This opportunity allows me to continue to build on our agency’s commitment to strong internal controls, ethical governance, and continuous improvement. I have been extremely fortunate to have served with a talented and hard-working team of audit professionals so far during my career,” Thompson conveyed her sentiments in the department's announcement. She has been a resident of Middle Tennessee for over a decade since relocating from her native Northern Kentucky, leading now a group dedicated auditors, she is set to foster an environment of transparency and accountability within the TDCI.
