Cabarrus County EMS's Simulation Center just got its provisional accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), marking a significant step for the 1,600-square-foot training facility. The center, part of the new EMS headquarters that opened in 2023, offers various simulated environments—ranging from a skills lab to a scenario room and an immersive projection video room, according to the Cabarrus County.
Training at the center is hands-on, with a focus on practical skills like IVs, airway management, and the operation of heart monitors. "This milestone reflects countless hours of dedication from our Education Department, especially Captain Karla Brown and Simulation Technical Specialist Alicia Marchand," Justin Brines, EMS Deputy Chief of Administration, said, as reported by the Cabarrus County. Their efforts were integral to the center securing this accreditation.
The space is tricked out with high-tech gear, including lifelike silicone manikins that breathe, speak, and integrate with heart monitors. Capable of replicating various scenes like accidents and public venues, it allows EMS personnel to practice emergency response in challenging, realistic conditions. The full sensory environment—enhanced with sound and scent—aims to better prepare trainees for real-world emergencies, as obtained by the Cabarrus County.
All EMS personnel must undergo six training scenarios annually in this cutting-edge center, but the doors are open for additional practice as needed. "We bring them into our training space to utilize the same equipment that they would use providing care to our community," Captain Brown told the Cabarrus County. The center not only serves EMS but also other first responders who wish to request the space.
Provisional accreditation is just the first step—the center aims for full accreditation by the end of 2027. This will require a tougher application, including a site visit and a review of clinical performance. In the past, it has hosted holiday events with themed rooms like winter wonderlands. The current SSH accreditation shows the center meets high standards, following a detailed review of its records and equipment. Captain Brown praised the achievement, which is valid through 2027, as per the Cabarrus County.
