Charlotte Area Transit System officials have released surveillance footage of a fatal stabbing aboard a light rail in South End last month. The video shows 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska being attacked as passengers attempt to respond.
According to WSOC-TV, the footage captures Zarutska being stabbed by an individual identified as Brown, who pulled a pocketknife from his hoodie. In the moments after the attack, no one physically intervened or provided immediate aid as Zarutska was on the floor.
WBTV reports that while some passengers moved away, at least one person appeared to approach Zarutska to help, showing differing reactions among witnesses.
Video from another angle shows Brown walking through the rail car and exiting at the next station. Several passengers also exited, and video from the platform shows people running. WCCB Charlotte reports the footage shows Zarutska looking at Brown about 30 seconds before collapsing.
The incident has prompted questions about safety measures on public transportation.
