An incident on Chicago's West Side led to an injured Chicago Police Department officer and the capture of a suspect following a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle early Saturday morning. The pursuit started when Illinois State Police troopers spotted the hijacked vehicle around 1:15 a.m. near West Ogden Avenue and West Polk Avenue. Attempts to stop the vehicle resulted in a pursuit, during which three individuals allegedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot, according to reports from WGN-TV.
As the chase ensued, the stolen vehicle collided head-on with a CPD squad car at the intersection of West Madison Street and North Pulaski Road in the Garfield Park neighborhood. This collision resulted in injuries to both the driver of the stolen vehicle and the officer inside the squad car. After the crash, the driver of the carjacked van attempted to escape on foot, but officers managed to apprehend the suspect, WGN-TV reported. Both injured parties were then transported to a local hospital; their conditions were not immediately known, but they are being treated for yet-to-be-disclosed injuries.
Details on the circumstances leading up to the chase were sparse, but authorities confirmed the vehicle involved was indeed carjacked before its driver led troopers on the dangerous chase. The events unfolded in the early hours and disrupted the usual calm of the West Side neighborhood. Information provided by ABC7 Chicago also indicated that the incident culminated in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have yet to announce any charges against the individual in custody. The identities of the officer and the suspect have not been released, and the extent of their injuries remains unclear, local sources said.
