Over Labor Day weekend, a surge in gun violence struck the city of Chicago, with a reported 57 people shot and eight fatalities. Amid the chaos, the Pilsen community grapples with the loss of a man known affectionately as Pepe, a local figure who, residents claim, was an innocent victim of a crossfire incident early Sunday morning. According to WGN-TV, Pepe died of a gunshot wound to the head as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Near West 17th Street and Wolcott Avenue, the scene of the shooting, a memorial blooms with contributions of flowers, candles, and balloons, symbolizing the community's shared sorrow. Pepe, who was 46, had lived on the streets of Pilsen for many years, and despite this harsh reality, was remembered by locals as "very kind, thoughtful, respectful," according to resident Dalia Radecki in a statement obtained by WGN-TV. Dan Buchanan, owner of anemoia, a creative studio and vintage shop in Pilsen, also expressed his heartbreak over Pepe's death and shared that Pepe would often attend events at his shop, sometimes even managing the door or dancing to the music.
The burst of gunfire that tragically ended Pepe's life was caught on home surveillance cameras, with the tumultuous sounds lasting about 15 seconds. Police have collected around 50 shell casings in the area, signaling that multiple guns were involved in the incident. Tragically, two other men were wounded in the legs but are expected to survive. As of now, no arrests or charges have been announced even though the Chicago Police Department is actively investigating, urging anyone with information to come forward. Individuals with information can contact the detectives or provide anonymous tips at CPDTip.com, as per WGN-TV.
Adjacent witnesses have begun to push for change after the violent event, sharing videos of the spree with the alderman's office, in hope to end such occurrences. According to CBS News Chicago, staff members for Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez stated that they had received reports of an unlicensed event space and are looking into the matter. As the community mourns, a GoFundMe started by Buchanan seeks to raise money for Pepe's funeral expenses, a testament to the kindness and affection the local residents had towards a man who, in Buchanan's words, "didn't bother anybody." The impromptu memorial and the fundraising efforts reflect the bond he had with the neighborhood and the void his death has created in the heart of Pilsen's community.
