Four arrests have been made following a shooting that occurred in downtown Indianapolis, which left one man injured and several vehicles damaged by gunfire. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, as Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers heard gunshots near the 100 block of E. South Street. On arrival, they discovered two vehicles struck by bullets and multiple shell casings scattered around the area. WISH-TV reported that shortly after, a man believed to be involved in the incident arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound, listed in stable condition.
IMPD officers acted rapidly to detain two individuals seen allegedly to be tucking guns into their waistbands. FOX59 identified the suspects as 30-year-old Joshua Vaughn and 23-year-old Ron Paul. Vaughn held an active warrant from Hamilton County, while Paul was charged for unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior conviction. As officers cordoned off the crime scene, they encountered a vehicle whose occupants were suspected to quickly have been involved in the shooting.
The driver of the said vehicle attempted to evade authorities, sparking a chase that concluded near the 1100 block of Shelby Street. According to information obtained by 13News, 26-year-old Dajaymeon Cantrell was apprehended on charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of marijuana. Moreover, a dropped cellphone at the scene led officers to another suspect, 25-year-old James Gary Jr., who matched the description of one of the individuals fleeing the vehicle.
The gun found matched the caliber of shell casings from the South Street scene, suggesting a potential link to the shooting. 13News detailed the charges against the arrested individuals, including unlawful carrying of a handgun, resisting law enforcement, and dealing in marijuana. While Vaughn is the only suspect not currently listed as an inmate, detectives are working to gather more evidence and video footage to piece together the sequence of events that led to the altercation.
IMPD is calling on anyone with information to come forward. Anonymous tips can be shared with the IMPD Aggravated Assault office at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will ultimately decide on the formal charges for the individuals taken into custody.
