In a recent meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Germantown's educators and youth were celebrated for their exceptional contributions. The Germantown Education Commission presented awards for Teacher of the Month and the Youth Excellence Award for September 2025. Nikki Benzing from Farmington Elementary School took home the Teacher of the Month, while Addison Abney of Evangelical Christian School was honored with the Youth Excellence Award.
Benzing, with her impressive 28-year track record, has been shaping young minds as a third-grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. Known to go above and beyond textbook lessons, Benzing has been recognized for her ability to imbue her students with values of kindness and empathy. "She is teaching the skills that aren't in the textbooks—kindness, empathy and inclusivity," a parent told Germantown's news page. In acknowledgement of her innovative teaching methods, she's lauded for her hands-on educational approach, creating an inclusive and exciting learning environment.
On the other side, Addison Abney, a standout senior maintaining a 4.85 GPA alongside a raft of extracurriculars, has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to balance academics and leadership activities. Celebrated for her intellectual curiosity, especially in psychology, she’s been involved in roles from Service Prefect to member of multiple service organizations, and was selected for the Memphis Business Journal’s NextGen Program.
Abney's contributions extend widely, most notably through her foundation of Drip Co., an initiative aimed at actively supporting mental health awareness and spreading kindness. Through her efforts, she has successfully raised funds, distributed encouraging messages, and expanded the initiative's reach nationwide. Her achievements rightly earned her recognition, with her peers calling her "altruistic, dependable and inspiring," according to the accolades listed on Germantown's official announcement.
Both Benzing and Abney's notable accomplishments illustrate the vital importance of community investment in education and the indelible impact of committed individuals. These awards not only highlight their personal achievements but also represent the collective aspirations and potential of the Germantown community at large.
