A routine traffic stop turned Hollywood-action-movie-esque in Plantation, Florida, after a passenger, now wanted, decided to literally take the plunge to evade police. The Florida Highway Patrol reported a silver pickup truck was pulled over for a stop sign violation and illegal window tint on State Road 84 and Pine Island Road, as cited by WSVN. While the driver handed over appropriate documentation and complied, the passengers were not as cooperative.
The tension peaked as one of the passengers, confronted with the need to suddenly provide identification, chose instead to resist. As additional officers arrived to aid, the unnamed individual managed to not just free themselves, but also to dive into the adjacent canal. This act of desperation was carried out with one wrist bound in handcuffs, a detail confirmed by police and included in a radio transmission obtained by CBS News Miami, which quoted the dispatcher reporting, "He's in one handcuff and escaped from them. He's now attempting to swim across the canal in Broward and 136th."
The pursuit of the escaped passenger has joined forces and resources from multiple agencies. While the driver of the vehicle faces no charges, the investigation into the passengers and the circumstances surrounding their failure to provide the necessary paperwork continues. Border Patrol has been contacted to aid with identification, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Neither publication had definitive updates on whether any passengers had been taken into custody following the incident.
Authorities have so far kept details close to the vest regarding the ongoing search for the handcuffed fugitive. As the escaped individual remains at large, FHP asserts that efforts to locate them persist. CBS News Miami reports that they have requested additional information about the incident and the status of the passengers initially detained. Updates will be issued as the inquiry unravels further details in this developing story.
