Howard County schools will receive more than $376,000 through Indiana’s Secured School Safety Grant Program to strengthen security measures. The funding is part of a statewide $27 million investment in school safety.

According to the Indiana House Republicans, State Representatives Mike Karickhoff and Heath VanNatter noted that the grants support upgrades to safety systems. The state has also moved the Office of School Safety under the Department of Homeland Security to centralize safety efforts.

Grant allocations include $60,125 for Eastern Howard School Corp., $92,500 for Kokomo School Corp., $83,250 for Northwestern School Corp., $47,701 for Taylor Community School Corp., and $92,495 for Western School Corp. Funds may be used for resource officers, advanced technology, and active event warning systems.

Indiana has invested more than $214 million in school safety through state matching grants since 2013. More information on the Secured School Safety Grant Program is available at in.gov/schoolsafety.
